냉동인간이 다시 회생할 가능성이 있을까?

Is there any chance that frozen humans will be revived?

1980년 12월에 19세의 소녀 진 힐리어드양은 고향인 미네소타 주 렝비에 살고 있었다. 12월 20일 밤 자정 무렵 이 지역 날씨는 영하 22도의 추운 날씨였으나 진은 친구들과 외출을 마치고 집으로 돌아오는 중이었다.

In December 1980, Miss Jean Hilliard, a 19-year-old girl, was living in her hometown of Rengby, Minnesota.  At midnight on the night of December 20, the weather in the area was as cold as -22 degrees, but Jean was returning home after a meeting with friends.

이날 진은 그녀의 아버지 자동차인 포드 LTD를 몰고 나갔는데 이 차는 후륜 구동이었고 잠금 방지 브레이크가 없었기 때문에 얼어붙은 빙판길을 운행하는 동안 차가 도랑으로 미끄러져 더 이상 운행이 불가했다. 당시 카우보이 부츠를 신고 있던 진은 도움을 청하기 위해 그곳에서 약 2마일 정도 떨어진 친구 월리 넬슨집으로 걸어 갔다.

On this day, Jean drove her father’s car, a Ford LTD, which was rear-wheel drive and had no anti-lock brakes, so the car slid into a ditch while driving on icy roads, making it no longer possible to drive. Jean, who was wearing cowboy boots at the time, walked to his friend’s Wally Nelson house, about two miles from there, to call for help.

근데 월리의 집은 진이 생각한 것 보다 훨씬 더 멀리 떨어져 있는 것 같았고, 그렇게 힘들게 월리의 집 앞까지 왔을 때 그만 세상은 깜깜해 졌다는 것이 진의 진술이다. 

But Wally’s house seemed to be much farther away than Jean thought, and when she made it to Wally’s front door, the world went black.

새벽 7시쯤, 월리는 전날 밤 집에 데려온 한 여성과 함께 일어났다. 그런 다음 그는 문에서 약 15피트 떨어진 눈 덮인 잔디밭에서 “작은 덩어리”를 발견했다고 한다. 그것은 바로 코트와 장갑을 낀 진이었다.

At about 7 a.m., Wally woke up with a woman he had brought home the night before. He then allegedly found a “small lump” on the snow-covered lawn about 15 feet from the door. It was Jean with a coat and gloves.

월리는 당시 진의 가장 친한 친구와 데이트하고 있었기 때문에 진을 잘 알고 있었다. 그러나 그녀는 잔디밭에서 눈을 크게 뜨고 뻣뻣하게 얼어 붙어 있었다.  진은 새벽1시경 그곳에 도착하자 마자 쓰러져서 약 6시간 동안 눈 속에 파 묻혀 얼어 버린 것이었다. 월리는 그녀가 나무판자보다 더 뻣뻣하게 얼어 죽었다고 생각했는데 코에서는 거품이 몇 개 나오는 것을 보았다고 회상했다.

Wally knew Jean well because he was dating Jean’s best friend at the time. But she was frozen stiffly on the lawn with her eyes wide open.  As soon as Jean arrived there around 1 a.m., she collapsed and froze in the snow for about six hours. Wally thought she had frozen to death stiffer than a wooden plank, but recalled seeing a few bubbles coming out of her nose.

월리는 자신의 여친과 함께 진을 트럭에 싣고자 했지만 진의 몸이 뻣뻣해져서 좌석에는 실을 수 없어 결국 트럭의 트렁크에 싣고 가까운 병원으로 달려 갔다.

Wally and his girlfriend tried to load Jean into the truck, but Jean’s body became stiff and could not be put on the seat, so they loaded her into the trunk of the truck and rushed to the nearest hospital.

담당 의료진은 진에 대한 회생 가능성을 가지지 않았다. 그녀의 피부는 너무 얼어서 피하 주사 바늘로 뚫을 수 없었고 그녀의 체온은 너무 낮아서 온도계에 등록되지 않을 정도였다. 그녀의 얼굴은 잿빛 회색이었고 그녀의 눈은 빛의 변화에 반응하지 않았다.

The medical staff in charge had no chance of reviving Jean. Her skin was too frozen to pierce with a hypodermic needle, and her body temperature was so low that it could not register on a thermometer. Her face was grayish-gray, and her eyes did not react to changes in light.

병원에 도착했을 때 그녀의 체온은 정상보다 10도 낮은 화씨88도 정도였기 때문에 이미 죽었다고 생각했지만, 의료진은 우선 가열 패드로 점차 몸을 따뜻하게 한번 해 보기로 결정했다. 체온이 올라가면서 진은 분당 12 비트의 희미한 맥박이 뛰기 시작했다. 이 시점에서 의사들은 환자가 아직 살아 있을 수 있다고 믿게 되었다.

When she arrived at the hospital, her temperature was about 88 degrees Fahrenheit, which is 10 degrees below normal, so they thought she was already dead, but the medical team decided to try gradually warming herself with a heating pad first. As her body temperature rose, Jean began to have a faint pulse of 12 beats per minute. At this point, doctors came to believe that the patient could still be alive.

해동을 시작한 지 2-3시간이 지나자 신체 반응이 서서히 나타나기 시작했다. 그리고 그날 아침 중반에 진은 경련으로 깨어났다. 정오에, 그녀는 아버지가 차를 망가 뜨린 것에 대해 어떻게 생각할지 걱정하면서 일관되게 이야기하고 있었다.  “마치 병원에서 잠이 들었다가 깨어난 것 같아요.” 그녀가 말했다.

Two or three hours after the thaw started, the body’s reaction slowly began to appear. And in the middle of that morning, Jean woke up convulsively. At noon, she was talking consistently, worrying about what her father would think about wrecking the car.  “It’s like falling asleep in the hospital and waking up,” she said.

진의 회복은 한마디로 기적이었고, 냉동인간이 다시 깨어날 수 있는 가능성을 보여 준 것이었다.

Jean’s recovery was, in a word, a miracle, and showed the possibility of the frozen human waking up again.

미네소타 대학의 데이비드 플러머 박사는 지난 10 년 동안 얼어 붙은 사람을 되살리는 약 12 건의 사례를 처리했다고 말한다.  의학은 사람의 몸이 차가워지면 동면 중인 곰과 마찬가지로 혈류가 느려져 기어간다고 한다. 이 시점에서 사람의 신체는 산소를 덜 필요로 하고, 사람의 혈류가 체온과 같은 속도로 증가하면 종종 회복되기도 한다고 한다.

Dr. David Plummer of the University of Minnesota says he has handled about a dozen cases of reviving a frozen person in the past decade.  Medicine says that when a person’s body is cold, blood flow slows down and crawls, just like a hibernating bear. At this point, the human body needs less oxygen, and when a person’s blood flow increases at the same rate as body temperature, it often recovers.

미국 아리조나주에 알코수명연장재단(Alcor Life Extensions Foundation)이 있다.  이곳에는 영원한 삶 또는 부활을 꿈꾸던 사람들이 약 2억원의 돈을 내고 냉동인간이 되어 미래의 과학이 자신들을 소생시켜 줄 수 있을 때 까지 대기하는 시신들이 약 200구 정도 보관되어 있다.

There is an Alcor Life Extensions Foundation in Arizona, USA.  There are about 200 bodies stored here where people who dreamed of eternal life or resurrection paid about 200 million won to become frozen humans and wait until future science can revive them.

이처럼 미래의 의술이 자신을 회복 시켜 줄 수 있을 것으로 믿고 냉동인간의 형태로 저장되는 상태를 크로닉스(cryonics)라고 부른다.  여러분들이 만일 생명을 위태롭게 할 정도의 중병이 발생했을 때 누군가 앰뷸런스를 제공하여 병원으로 이송하겠다고 하면 이것을 받아 들이고 앰뷸런스를 탈 것인가?  아니면 죽음을 받아 들이고 그대로 사망할 것인가?  크로닉스는 장기적으로 보면 바로 앰뷸런스에 해당한다고 볼 수 있다.  냉동인간의 선택은 나중에 의학이 자신을 깨워줄 수 있을 때까지 크로닉스 즉 앰뷸런스에 타는 것에 불과한 것이다.

In this way, believing that future medicine can restore oneself, the state of storage in the form of frozen humans is called Cryonics.  If you are seriously ill and your life is in danger, and someone offers to take you to the hospital by ambulance, will you accept this and take the ambulance?  Or will they accept death and die as it is?  In the long run, the Cryonics is the equivalent of an ambulance.  The frozen person’s choice is nothing more than getting into a cryonics, or ambulance, until medicine can wake the person up later.

영원한 삶을 추구하는 인간의 본성이 추상적인 종교의 형태로 다가오면 훨씬 받아들이기 쉽다.  어차피 이생(今生)이 유한하다는 사실을 알기 때문에 종교는 죽어서라도 영생을 얻기 위한 처절한 몸부림으로 보이기도 한다.  믿음을 가지는 것은 어쩌면 크로닉스에 타는 행위가 아닐까?

When human nature in pursuit of eternal life comes in the form of abstract religion, it is much more likely to be accepted.  Knowing that this life is finite anyway, religion may seem like a desperate struggle to gain eternal life, even after death.  Maybe having faith is an act of riding on the Cryonics?

신약성경에서 바울은 자신이 죽음에 대하여 어떠한 태도를 취하고 있는지 설명한 바 있다. 로마서 9:3에서 그는 “나의 형제 곧 골육의 친척을 위하여 내 자신이 저주를 받아 그리스도에게서 끊어질지라도 원하는 바로라”.  즉, 자신은 저주를 받아 죽어 지옥을 가는 한이 있더라도 다른 사람들이 구원을 받기를 원한다는 것이다. 

In the New Testament, Paul explained his attitude toward death. In Romans 9:3 he says, “For the sake of my brethren, relatives of flesh, though I myself be cursed and cut off from Christ.”  In other words, even if he is cursed to death and goes to hell, he wants others to be saved.

많은 기독교인들은 이 부분에서 구원에만 초점을 두고 있지만, 필자는 자신의 죽음에 대한 바울의 태도에서 교훈을 얻는다. 즉, 바울은 그 정도로 다른 사람을 사랑했다는 정도이지 결코 자신이 그리스도와 끊어지는 상황을 초래하지 않을 것이라는 뜻이 아니라, “행함이 없는 믿음은 죽은 믿음”, “이웃 사랑이 율법의 완성”이라는 성경 말씀에 비추어 다른 사람이 자신의 지옥행으로 구원(영생) 받을 수 있다면 기꺼이 그리하겠다는 자기 희생으로 보인다.

Many Christians focus only on salvation here, but I learn from Paul’s attitude toward his own death. In other words, Paul loved others to that extent, not that he would never cause himself to be separated from Christ, but that in light of the Bible’s words that “faith without works is dead faith” and “love of neighbor is the fulfillment of the law,” it appears to be a self-sacrifice that if others can be saved (eternal life) by their own hell journey, they will do so.

많은 종교인들이 한편으로는 영생을 얻기 위한 종교적 크로닉스에 탑승해 있으면서도 이승에서 100년 200년 살 수 있다는 것에 거부감을 느끼며 “그렇게 오래 살고 싶지 않다”고 말하는 교인들이 종종 있다.  심지어는 “나는 약 80-90세가 되면 미련없이 죽음을 받아 들이겠다”고 하는 분들도 보았다.

Many religious people, on the one hand, are on board religious cryonics to obtain eternal life, but they often feel reluctant to live for 100 or 200 years and say, “I don’t want to live that long.”  I even saw people say, “When I’m about 80 or 90 years old, I’ll accept death without hesitation.”

그러나 80-90세가 된 노인들에게 심정을 여쭈어 보면 “죽을 때 까지 건강하게 살고 싶다”고 하지 결코 “살만큼 살았으니 오늘 당장 죽고 싶다”고 하는 분들은 보지 못했다.  다만, 생활고에 찌들고 혼자서의 삶이 녹록치 않은 분들은 제외하고. . .

However, when I ask elderly people who are 80 or 90 years old how they feel, I have often seen them say, “I want to live a healthy life until I die,” but have never seen them say, “I have lived long enough and I want to die today.”  However, except for those who are stuck with the hardships of life and have difficulty living alone. . .

고체로 얼어 붙은 상황이 이상적이지는 않지만 깊은 동면이 사람들의 생명을 구할 수 있다는 개념은 낙관적이다. 의사들은 얼어 죽을 뿐만 아니라 총상, 두부 외상 및 심장 마비로부터 생명을 구하기 위해 이 동면과 같은 상태에 대해 점점 더 많은 정보를 계속 찾고 있다.

Although the situation of freezing to solids is not ideal, the notion that deep hibernation can save people’s lives is optimistic. Doctors continue to seek more and more information about this hibernation-like condition in order to save lives from gunshot wounds, head trauma and heart attacks, as well as freezing to death.

진 힐리어드는 이제 보행자 생활을 하고 있다. 그녀는 시련으로 인한 악영향을 받지 않았으며 그 이후로 결혼하고 아이를 낳고 이혼했다. 그녀는 또한 더 이상 밤에 빙판길에서 운전하지 않는다고 한다.

Jean Hilliard is now a pedestrian. She was not adversely affected by the ordeal and has since married, had children, and divorced. She also says she no longer drives on icy roads at night.
